Sport Book Service | Rory McIlroy wont let confidence derail Ryder Cup challenge if he beats Americans to 9m Tour Championship jackpot

Rory McIlroy is bidding to win a huge cash prize before the Ryder Cup starts

RORY McILORYinsisted his bid to land a near-9million jackpot at the Tour Championship would have no effect on his Ryder Cup team-mates next week.

McIlroy is the only member of the European team in action at East Lake, and he is squaring up to eight Hazeltine-bound Americans and a host of contenders for Davis Loves final wild card.

A victory against those odds would be a tremendous confidence boost - as well as landing him a 1.2million winner's cheque and almost clinch the 7.7million bonus as FedEx Cup champion.

But he said it would have no bearing on the Ryder Cup outcome.

The world No 3 explained: A victory herewould be great for me individually, and it would give me that extra confidence to go to Hazeltine and try to win as many matches as I can.But I don't think it would lift the team in any way. To themIdon't think it makes a difference if I win or not, because they will be wrapped up in their own preparations.

I feel like I am playing well enough. Ball-striking wise I am right there. I had one good week in Boston when it all came together, and ended up winning.I needed that after a long spell without a win over here, and it just feels like everything is heading in the right direction.

McIlory putted like a dream when he won the Deustche Bank Championship three weeks ago.

But the flat stick was misbehaving again when he could only mange a share of 42ndin his latest start, at the BMW Championship.

That prompted him to fly putting coach Phil Kenyon over to Florida, but apart from that the former world No 1 spent most of the past two weeks re-charging his batteries.

He added: I had Phil over for the weekend and had a couple of good days with him. But before that I went to Bermuda for four days. I completely switched off so that was nice.

I took the clubs with me but they didn't come out of the travel case. Then I got back to Florida on Saturday for the first time in three months.I was tired at Crooked Stick the win took a bit out of me I guess - so it was nice to get some time at home to get refreshed and ready for these two weeks. It has been an ideal build-up.

When he heads to Hazeltine, McIlroy will get an unusual reminder of how he almost missed his singles tee time the last time the Ryder Cup was played over here.

The police car that sped him to the tee at Medinah with three minutes to spare was put up for auction and snapped up by former team-mate Ian Poulter, who will be on duty as a vice-captain next week.
