But after penning a new contract last month and with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the helm, he believes the glory days are just around the corner again at Old Trafford.

And the 27-year-old England international is ready to play his part in restoring United to top spot as he insisted the criticism he has endured does not bother him.

Speaking to Goal, Jones said: Im lucky, Im lucky enough that I am strong mentally.

I know a lot of players will come out and say in the press that it doesnt bother them and then two minutes later theyll be on the Daily Mail on their phones, but it genuinely doesnt bother me.

I have a wonderful family, wonderful friends and I have a little girl now and I dont care what people say.

People can make their own opinions up, ultimately Ive got another contract at United, Ive been here for eight or nine years now and Ive won the Premier League, been to two World Cups, been to a Euros, played in theChampions League, won theEuropa League, the FA Cup, so people can talk but ultimately theyre the stats and thats what Ive done.

Now Jones, who is likely to be part of the United side at Wolves tomorrow in the FA Cup quarter-finals, is hoping to add more silverware to his collection.

And he believes Solskjaer has helped the Red Devils strike fear in to their opponents again as he discussed how close the club are to challenging for the title again.

Jones said: When Ive been asked that question in the past and we were going through a transition phase I always used to say, I dont think were far, but I genuinely dont think were far away.

I think weve got a really good squad, weve got exciting players coming through, weve got a good mix of youth and experience and you can see, the way were playing, teams fear us again, dont want to play us again and slowly but surely were getting back to our best. Were still learning, were still improving but well get there.

So are United out of the transition phase of the post-Ferguson years?

He added: I think we are out of that. Well, were not out of it completely, were probably going to add a few more players in the summer, but were looking good, were looking sharp, we look a threat every time we go forward and like I said, teams fear us again.
