They prised the door open nine minutes in when Radja Nainggolans stray pass fell into the path of Firmino.
This little diamond set Mane free, giving him time to breath before sending his effort beyond Romas highly-fancied keeper, Allison.
The celebrations were incredible, with Liverpool players setting off around the pitch with their arms outstretched and planning the celebrations.
It did not last.
Roma came again, peppering Liverpools goal with pot-shots from every angle. Alessandro Florenzi, Nainggolan and Daniel de Rossi all had a go.
Then came the breakthrough when Stephan El Shaarawys header access goal was met by Lovren.
When he tried to put a foot through it, his effort rebounded off Milner and beyond Karius.
Roma started dreaming, with the flags flying his above the ultras stationed in the Stsdio Olimpicos curva sud.
Liverpool caught a second wind, scoring again after 27 minutes when Dzekos attempted clearance from a corner fell to Wijnaldum.
The Dutchman did not hesitate, heading beyond Allison from close range to put Liverpool 7-3 ahead on aggregate.
Even when Roma scored again, dragging themselves level with Liverpool on the night through Dzeko, they were up against it.
Klopps side still had the insurance policy, the mesmerising 5-2 scoreline from the first leg at Anfield to protect them.
For Roma to overcome that, they would have to do something really special in front of their passionate, partisan supporters.
It was too much to ask.
Liverpool, give or take the customary defensive lapses, were exceptional.
There were recriminations from Roma, especially after Trent Alexander-Arnold threw his arms in the way of Patrick Schicks cross inside the penalty area after 64 minutes.
They got lucky with that, but Liverpool had done enough to win this tie several times over by then.
Klopp is creating Kop history, writing his own compelling story after being reminded of their European Cup pedigree at every turn.
