MANCHESTER UNITEDS trip to Seville has been marred after five fans were arrested for allegedly throwing stones at a hotel, damaging motorbikes and assaulting police during a drunken orgy of violence.

Town hall chiefs said an officer was injured in the attempt to detain one of the Brits after he fled the scene.

The men had stayed on in the city following Uniteds 0-0 Champions League draw with Sevilla on Wednesday.

A hotel caretaker alerted police around midnight on Thursday after the five hooligans allegedly threw stones against the front of the building, showing officers one of the missiles that had been hurled.

Another police patrol witnessed the men pushing several motorbikes to the ground around the same time.

Officers were assaulted when they went to intervene.

The city-centre hotel has not been named.

A Seville town hall spokesman said: The police tried to calm them down but were surrounded by the hooligans who began to insult the officers and push them.

Describing how the Brits fled after police back-up arrived and four of them were detained after a chase despite resisting arrest, he added: One of the officers suffered a hand injury for which he was subsequently treated.

He also revealed the fifth suspect - held after police discovered where the Brits were staying and put a watch on their accommodation - had broken a police car windscreen after jumping on the vehicle in his bid to escape arrest.

The Brits, aged 27 to 30, were subsequently accused of an unrelated assault a day earlier on a member of the public who also required medical treatment.

They are expected to appear in court in the coming hours.

It not yet clear what charges they will face, and whether they will be dealt with by way of a speedy trial or forced to stay in Spain as part of an ongoing judicial investigation while their fate is decided.

The violence in Seville happened on the same night a police officer was killed during ugly clashes in Bilbao between Athletic Bilbao and Spartak Moscow fans ahead of their Europa League tie.

The officer, thought to have died following a heart attack, has been named as father-of-two Inocencio Arias Garcia.
