SportBook Service | ITV rival BT Sport and Sky with bid to restore Champions League to terrestrial TV

Jordan Henderson helps Liverpool win the Champions League in June this year - and games before the final could also be shown on terrestrial TV again from 2021

ITV and Sky could try to reclaim the Champions League right from BT Sport, a report says.

With Uefa unhappy at low viewing figures, The Times suggest ITV are weighing up an offer to bring Europe's top domestic tournament back to terrestrial television.

BT's exclusive reign could end in 2021 after they paid a huge 1.18billion two years to ago to extend rights they won in 2015.

ITV and Sky shared the rights until four years ago when BT produced a stunning bid.

And if ITV put together another proposal for 2021-2024 it is likely to be similar to their last coverage - showing one or two midweek games, with pay TV broadcasting the other match.

The Champions League final is still free to air as it is a listed event under Government rules.

The Times say the document for a future deal splits the rights into different packages.

This means broadcasters could, for example, bid to just show the final.

Early kick-off games will move from 5.45pm to 5.55.

If Uefa does get and consider an offer from ITV, it would almost certainly have to accept a much lower sum than its deal with BT.

Sky was thought to be unhappy with poor viewing figures when it last broadcast the Champions League.

But Sky then bought rights to the unexpectedly-successful Nations League in what some saw as a first step towards bidding for the Champions League once more.

Meanwhile, TV rights for the Europa League and the newly-formed Europa Conference League will come as one bundle.

The Carabao Cup winners will be England's sole representatives in next season's Conference League.
