GOLF is to get arevolutionary overhaul as bosses scrap the traditional final round for a matchplay shootout with the use of a specially-built Knockout Hole.

The World Super 6 Perth event will see pros play three rounds strokeplay - with a cut after the first two - before the top-24 then do battle over six-hole matches.

Nearest-the-pin deciders will be used on theKnockout Hole to determine winners if there is a tiethe first time round.

Only the first shot will count on the 99-yard part-three at Lake Karrinyup course in Perth, Australia.

The new event announced today could attract big names including Rory McIlroy - who won the Australian Open in 2013 - and Masters champion Danny Willett because it is co-sanctioned by the European Tour.

Brian Thorburn, chief executive of the PGA Tour of Australasia, said: "Cricket has Twenty20, rugby union has sevens, netball has Fast 5 and now golf has the World Super 6 Perth.

"This is an exciting day for international golf because the World Super 6 Perth is a tournament which will change the way people view golf."

TheWorld Super 6will take place on February 16-19 next year - in what would have been an off-week on Tour - and will be part of the season-long Race to Dubai points race.

Eight of the 24 players to make it through to the matchplay round will be seeded. They will then take on the eight winners from the first eight knockout games.

These will be whittled down to a final two who will compete for the top prize.

The new format could also beused in Tokyo 2020 - where Justin Rose will be defending champion.

European Tour bossKeith Pelley said: "This initiative was something that we spoke about at great length to our Tournament Committee, led by Chairman Thomas Bjrn.

"We are thrilled to participate in this because, at the European Tour, we believe that golf needs to look at new and innovative formats."
