TIGER WOODS has revealed how Rory McIlroy compared his brilliant comeback victory to an historic Jack Nicklaus US Open triumph as they walked down the 18th on Sunday.
Woods ended five years of turmoil at the weekend when he claimed the PGA Tour title in Atlanta - his first victory since August 2013.
It capped a remarkable climb back to the pinnacle of golf just a year after the 42-year-old underwent spinal fusion surgery.
The win was greeted with chaotic scenes out on the course as Woods and McIlroy made their way down the final fairway with spectators clamouring to acclaim their hero.
And as they walked up towards the 18th green after Woods had sent a brilliant approach shot into the putting surface McIlroy, 29, had a quiet word with his playing partner.
Woods revealed: "What Rory was saying, you know, Rory was just off the tee, he was great, and then coming down 18 between our second and third shots, he said, This is like Jack in 80 at Baltusrol.
Excited fans enter the Golf course to follow Tiger Woods to the final hole as he wins Tour Championship - his first tournament win since 2013"I said, yeah, I just didnt have the tight pants and the hair. But it was all good."
Baltusrol was the venue of another historic comeback from a golfing legend, when American hero Nicklaus claimed his second US Open title in 1980.
The all-time record Major winner had spent two-years scratching around the Tour without a victory with his once awesome powers seemingly on the wane.
In the tournament before Baltusrol Nicklaus had missed the cut and, aged 40, his better days appeared long gone.
Tiger Woods in shock saying he cant believe I pulled this off after winning Tour ChampionshipBut Nickalus had other thoughts, and stunned his rivals by carding a brilliant 272 over the four days to return to the top of the sport.
That performance gripped fans who had gone to watch, and chants of "Jack is back, Jack is back" echoed around the course as he closed in on the win.
Such scenes are rarely seen on golf courses outside the intense atmosphere of the Ryder Cup, and the moment was not lost on McIlroy who was able to savour history being made even though his own challenge for the win had faded.
