The famous stadium has a history of creating a hostile atmosphere for visiting teams on big European nights - occasions that have seen experienced players freeze in the past.

But City chief Guardiola has backed Gabriel Jesus - who turned 21 yesterday - Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane to step up.

Sterling is assured of a hostile reception on his return to his old club - and has struggled in the past.

Guardiola said: "Why should I doubt them when they've done it on many stages quite well?

"We are so happy with all of them, those three guys.

"You need experience to be better but you also need to live these situations - and they are young.

"If it does not go well it will be a good lesson for the future, so it's what it is."

Aguero has been battling to be ready for the game but stayed behind in Manchester when his team made the short journey to Merseyside.

Guardiola said: "Sergio is much better but the physios spoke and he said he's still got a problem and is not comfortable.

"It's not perfect so that's why he could not come here.

"We will see about the derby on Saturday."

City are on the verge of sealing the Premier League title, and victory over Manchester United this weekend will see them crowned champions.
