Liverpool legend Terry McDermott is selling his European Cup medals

LIVERPOOL legend Terry McDermott is flogging his three European Cup winners medals - just days before the Reds hope to win the trophy for the sixth time.

The former Anfield and England midfielder is putting the personal mementos of his glittering career up for sale at London auction house Sothebys on May 22.

That is just four days before Jurgen Klopps modern-day Liverpool stars hope to be in Kiev playing this years Champions League Final, which would be the eighth time the Reds have reached European footballs biggest date.

But in a sign of how the game has changed, McDermott, 66, is likely to earn less from the sale of a professional lifetime of memories than Egyptian ace Mo Salah stands to make in a WEEK from his new Anfield deal.

McDermotts stunning career saw him play a key role in Liverpools triumphs against Borussia Moenchengladbach in Rome in 1977 - when he scored the opening goal - and the 1-0 wins over Bruges at Wembley the following year and Real Madrid in Paris in 1981.

Those three medals are up at reserve prices of 10-15,000 each.

McDermott is also selling his four League Championship medals, with asking prices of 8,000 each.

And with Salah this morning expected to become the 12th different Liverpool player to be named Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers Association, McDermotts own trophy from 1980, as well as the PFA award for the same season, are on offer for 6,000 each.

Those big items could gross around 90,000 but in total there are 43 items up for sale with the cheapest being a presentation from the Adelphi Casino in Liverpool to commemorate the 1976-77 season, with a reserve price of 80-120.

If things go well, and in a sign of how the game has changed since he was in his prime, McDermott could make around 150,000 from the sale, a stark contrast to Salahs proposed new deal at 185,000 per week.

McDermott has insisted the sale has been a long-term plan and recently suggested it had been in his mind for five years rather than being forced by his present circumstances.

His wife Carole recently fought a successful battle against cancer although McDermott, who still works in match-day hospitality at Anfield, conceded: I might get some stick for it in Liverpool - but I dont really care.

I could either put them in the loft, in the bank or sell them. And that is the best thing to do.

I dont need the money. I dont need the medals to be proud of what Ive done. I already know and that will not go away.

But I promised I will sell them and thats what Im going to do. Ive got three kids, who are doing very nicely, but I want to give them something before I die.

They can put in in a house or pay the mortgage off.

Reds fans may want to see Liverpool invest in Anfields heritage and buy some of the medals rather than see them falling into the hands of someone with no affinity for McDermott or the club.

The Sporting Memorabilia auction by Graham Budd Auctions is taking place at Sothebys in New Bond Street, London, on Tuesday May 22.
