But putting a bloke's face - and teeth - in the firing line is a different challenge altogether.

Not that it troubled the 48-year-old leftie.

Mickelson pulled off the feat while warming up on the range for this week's Open at Carnoustie.

He is shown lining up his effort with a volunteer no more than one yard away.

Mickelson winds up a full backswing with his lob wedge as the bloke standing within spitting distance somehow manages to smile - but with his eyes shut tightly.

He need not have worried, though, as Phil the Thrill sends the ball floating over his head.

Mickelson breaks into a big smile at the end - probably a little relieved that he will not have to pay for some expensive dental treatment had it gone wrong.

The American is looking for his second Open title - but it is coming in a year in which he has become embroiled in rules scandals.

He deliberately hit a moving ball during the US Open and was given a two-shot penalty for tapping down grass in front of a tee during a recent PGA Tour event.
